Fire Prevention
Have recent technological developments affected the concepts of fire safety engineering?
In the construction world, appropriate solutions should be found by strengthening building designs to withstand high temperatures for a longer period of time before they start to be affected by fires. Fire safety needs to be taken into account when designing, implementing, and maintaining buildings.
Providing preventive precautions from the design stage contributes to protecting the structure from fire hazards, which supports resistance to building collapse due to fire for an appropriate period of time, in addition to controlling the fire inside the building within the least possible space, and preventing its transmission to and from neighboring buildings. The specifications of the building materials used are determined according to the standards of the Saudi Building Code, and the advantage lies in the quality of the building, which will often be ideal due to the disciplined quality standards, and the application of the code also contributes to the durability of the structure of buildings, protection from natural disasters, in addition to its contribution to fire prevention, reducing electricity consumption and being cost-saving; Thus, it is reflected in the speed of completion and safety.
The role of the Prevention Department rests with the General Directorate of Civil Defense in studying engineering plans in the architectural and firefighting stages, which include many systems such as alarm, firefighting, and ventilation systems in all residential buildings, and seeks to apply compulsory insurance, which aims to set the minimum requirements. These are requirements that achieve the safety and stability of buildings and facilities, and the provision of a healthy environment, adequate lighting, and ventilation, to protect lives and property from risks associated with buildings.
In conclusion, we can underestimate the number of human and material losses caused by fires around the world. The biggest reason for this may be the lack of awareness of the causes and risks of home fires and the lack of sufficient experience in how to deal with home fires, and the damage caused by fires may be small or perhaps only material. However, sometimes home fires can cause unforgettable tragedies, and because our lives and the lives of our children and families are the most precious thing we have, we have to take some precautionary measures that will keep us away from an unforgivable experience.
